Zhou Dichen, V.V. Krasnykh. DEEP METAPHORS IN THE WORKS BY VICTORIA TOKAREVA: COMPREHENSION PROBLEMS FOR RUSSIAN LANGUAGE LEARNERS (BASED ON THE SHORT STORY A RUBLE SIXTY IS NOT MONEY)

The paper considers some deep metaphors represented in V. Tokareva’s short story A Ruble Sixty is Not Money and going back to the archetypal ideas that underlie the domestication of world by human. The article presents the main views of researchers on the nature of metaphor. The authors especially stipulate that metaphor is the most important tool for comprehending and linguizing the world. Based on the views of leading researchers in the field of metaphors studies and on the hypothesis of the existence of basic metaphors, the authors emphasize that «deep» metaphors belong to the archaic layers of consciousness and their correlation with language. The paper focuses on the deep metaphor of emptiness. The authors suggest that emptiness is the embodiment of the basic metaphor of absence/«non-existence». The latter is the embodiment of one of the poles of the most important is (there is) / no (there is not) opposition.
